In the Magar villages of Rolpa, there is a story told during the Dashain festival about two brothers who went to the kingdom of the dead and came back. Not in dreams. In their bodies, in their boots, with dirt still on their hands.

The elder brother, Dal, died of a fever in the month of Kartik. His younger brother, Bal, could not accept it. He followed the soul-path that the shamans speak of — the path that goes down through the roots of the largest fig tree in the village — and descended into Yama's kingdom.

Yama, the lord of the dead, is depicted as terrible. The stories are not wrong. But Bal came with a gift: a song his mother had taught them both as children, a Magar grinding song so particular to their village that no one else in the world knew it.

He sang it for Yama, who had been king of the dead so long he had forgotten what a living village sounded like. The grinding song with its rhythm of women working, its complaints about husbands, its jokes about the neighbour's cow —
