The Seti River that flows through Pokhara is not blue like most rivers — it is white as milk, white as snow. There is a reason for this, and it is not only the glacial flour carried down from the Annapurnas, though the geologists will tell you otherwise.

Long ago, a farmer had a daughter so fair-skinned that travellers would stop outside their house just to watch her work in the field. Her name was Sita. The farmer, proud but frightened by all the attention she drew, locked her inside during the day and let her out only at night.

Sita grew up knowing only moonlight. She never complained, because she had been told her beauty was a burden and she believed it. But one morning her father forgot to lock the door, and she stepped outside just as the sun was rising.

For the first time in her life, sunlight touched her face. She stood there with her eyes closed for a very long time.
